Total mod count tells you which Workshop communities are big. It doesn't tell you which ones are getting bigger — or which are emerging from nothing. A game with 300,000 mods that's been accumulating them since 2013 is a mature ecosystem. A game that had zero mods in January and 28,000 by August is a breakout.

ModSignal's live dataset tracks over 6.3 million active Workshop items across 401 games, each with a creation timestamp, subscription count, and continuous metrics. That lets us answer a different question than most rankings: which game ecosystems are growing fastest right now, measured by new mod creation velocity and year-over-year growth?

The results reveal where modding momentum is actually concentrating in 2026 — and it's not where you'd guess from the all-time leaderboards.

Methodology: creation velocity, not cumulative totals

Every ranking in this article is based on time_created — the Steam Workshop's creation timestamp for each item — filtered to active, non-deleted mods. We measure:

  • Year-over-year growth: new mods created in 2025 vs 2024, as a ratio
  • 2026 creation rate: new mods created since January 1, 2026, divided by 237 days (Jan 1–Aug 25)
  • Breakout mods: items created in 2026 that have already crossed 10,000 subscriptions

This surfaces games where the modding community itself is expanding — not just where legacy mods accumulate passive subscriptions.

People Playground's 4.35x growth rate is the standout. A sandbox physics game that launched its Workshop in 2020, it went from ~9,300 new mods in 2024 to over 40,000 in 2025 — and is on pace for 70,000+ in 2026. That's not a game discovering modding; it's a game whose modding community is compounding.

People Playground: the 4.35x growth story

People Playground is a physics sandbox where players experiment with ragdolls, weapons, and contraptions. Its Workshop has existed since 2020, but something shifted in mid-2025:

Month New Mods Created Subscriptions Accumulated
Jun 2025 1,011 953,657
Jul 2025 5,367 1,545,959
Aug 2025 6,345 1,353,716
Sep 2025 4,994 1,167,566
Oct 2025 5,658 1,353,064
Nov 2025 5,343 985,811
Dec 2025 6,709 1,358,362
Jan 2026 7,400 966,004
Feb 2026 6,757 1,086,030

The inflection point is July 2025, when monthly mod creation jumped from ~1,000 to ~5,500 and never went back. The top mods from this wave tell the story of what kind of content is driving it:

Mod Subscriptions Created
Better Limb Crushing 218,108 Dec 2025
Prostheses Mod 2.0 190,543 Dec 2025
Jujutsu Playground 188,692 Sep 2025
Beyond Nowhere 177,812 Jul 2025
Everything Destructible Mod 157,805 Oct 2025
Arterial Bleeding 153,179 Feb 2026
Nova's Spider-Man Mod 130,020 Aug 2025

These are content-expansion mods — new characters, physics interactions, and gore systems. They're not utility tools; they're the kind of creative additions that signal a thriving, self-sustaining modding community. When a Workshop ecosystem starts producing 50+ breakout mods (>10,000 subs) per year, it has crossed from hobbyist to platform.

Paralives: from zero to 28,000 mods in 90 days

Paralives is a life-simulation game (think The Sims but indie) that opened its Steam Workshop in 2026. The data shows a launch event unlike anything else in the dataset:

Month New Mods Subscriptions Accumulated
Feb 2026 7 143,080
Mar 2026 3 69,006
May 2026 10,553 9,815,621
Jun 2026 13,178 9,101,783
Jul 2026 3,266 1,371,912
Aug 2026 1,458 349,473

The Workshop opened in May 2026 and creators flooded in — 10,553 mods in the first month, 13,178 in June. The top mods are QoL tools and cosmetic packs, exactly what you'd expect from a life-sim community:

Mod Subscriptions Created
Sensible Camera Control 163,495 May 2026
[SHEEP] Succulent set 143,921 May 2026
Stylized Lash Pack 128,050 May 2026
Crystal Clear Map View 127,657 May 2026
Favorite Inks by myshunosun 126,754 May 2026
Invite to Current Lot 119,881 May 2026
Display Townies on Map 106,465 May 2026
Zoom out more! 101,877 May 2026

Eight mods crossed 100,000 subscriptions in their first month. That's not just a successful Workshop launch — it's evidence of pent-up creative demand from a community that had been waiting for the tools. Paralives now has 28,465 mods and 20.8 million accumulated subscriptions, all from 2026.

Slay the Spire 2: modding born in June

Slay the Spire 2 is another 2026 Workshop launch, but with a different profile. Where Paralives attracted cosmetic creators, Slay the Spire 2's Workshop is dominated by libraries and frameworks — the infrastructure layer of a modding ecosystem:

Mod Subscriptions Created
BaseLib 668,581 Jun 2026
RitsuLib 499,902 Jun 2026
ARAM: Mayhem 264,015 Jun 2026
Regent FX Omnistar 235,027 Jun 2026
Quick Restart 2 218,772 Jun 2026
MSGK Regent 209,059 Jun 2026

When the most-subscribed mods are libraries (BaseLib at 668K, RitsuLib at 499K), it means other mods depend on them. That's a sign of a modding ecosystem that's building architecture, not just one-off content. Slay the Spire 2's 2,434 mods and 10.1 million subscriptions all appeared after June 2026 — making it one of the fastest Workshop bootstraps on record.

Trailmakers: 399 mods per day

Trailmakers is the highest-volume Workshop on a per-day basis in 2026. With 94,496 new mods since January 1, that's an average of 399 mods created every single day. Its monthly data shows sustained, high-volume creation:

Month New Mods
Mar 2026 16,934
Jun 2026 13,452
Jul 2026 12,557
Apr 2026 12,838

Trailmakers is a vehicle-building sandbox, and its Workshop community creates vehicles, contraptions, and shareable builds at a rate that dwarfs every other game in the dataset. The Workshop has been active since 2018, but the creation rate has been accelerating — not stabilizing — since 2024. ComplexityMod (101K subs) is the top item, but the long tail is enormous: 298,344 total mods with 24.4 million subscriptions.

Castle Crashers: a Workshop that appeared overnight

Castle Crashers had no Workshop presence until August 2025, when 31,590 mods appeared in a single month. The top mods are character skins — crossover characters from other games:

Mod Subscriptions Created
THE KNIGHT 80,275 Aug 2025
SOLAIRE 63,345 Aug 2025
A Bottle of Ranch 61,423 Aug 2025
ISAAC CLARKE - DEAD SPACE 60,407 Aug 2025
DOOM FELLA 59,584 Aug 2025
Dante (DMC1) 59,421 Aug 2025
MASTER CHIEF 58,657 Aug 2025

This looks like a Workshop that opened to an existing modding community that had been working offline — or a game update that enabled Workshop integration and a backlog of community content was uploaded at once. Either way, it's a reminder that Workshop creation data can reveal when a community was given tools, not just whether one exists.

What growth velocity tells you that total count doesn't

The all-time leaderboards — Garry's Mod with 142K mods, Left 4 Dead 2 with 112K — are dominated by games that have been on the Workshop for a decade. They're mature ecosystems with stable, slow-growing communities. The velocity rankings tell a different story:

  • People Playground is compounding at 4.35x year-over-year. Its community is not just active; it's accelerating.
  • Paralives and Slay the Spire 2 didn't exist as Workshop ecosystems seven months ago. They now have 28K and 2.4K mods respectively.
  • Trailmakers publishes more mods per day (399) than most games publish per month.
  • Castle Crashers showed that Workshop creation can go from zero to 31K in a single month when the tools arrive.

For studios evaluating whether to invest in Workshop support, the signal is clear: it's not just about how big a Workshop is. It's about how fast it's growing — and whether the community is building infrastructure (libraries, frameworks) or just one-off content. The games on this list are where modding momentum is concentrating in 2026.
