Project Zomboid just did something almost no workshop game does. When The Indie Stone shipped its long-promised Build 42 update, the modding scene didn't just patch old mods — it kicked off the single most concentrated breakout wave on the entire Steam Workshop right now.
We measure momentum with a breakout score: a 0–100, peer-relative gauge computed against every other mod in the same game, weighting subscription velocity (50%), favorite growth (20%), view growth (20%), and update recency (10%). A score above 50 means a mod is genuinely outracing its catalogue.
Here's what the full dataset across 6.79 million active Workshop mods and 396 tracked games shows.
A quarter of the platform's breakout mods are Zomboid
Across all tracked games, 436 active mods currently hold a breakout score above 50 — the true momentum leaders of the Workshop. 111 of them are Project Zomboid mods: 25% of the entire leaderboard, from a single game.
That concentration is unheard of. The next-closest ecosystems trail by a wide margin:
| Game | Breakout mods (score > 50) | Avg breakout score |
|---|---|---|
| Project Zomboid | 111 | 93.4 |
| RimWorld | 77 | 91.4 |
| Cities: Skylines | 56 | 86.6 |
| Garry's Mod | 46 | 91.3 |
| Don't Starve Together | 42 | 90.7 |
| Counter-Strike 2 | 39 | 90.5 |
| DayZ | 24 | 88.2 |
Project Zomboid's 111 breakthrough mods collectively added 473,000+ new subscriptions in seven days — a surge concentrated in a single update cycle.
Build 42 is the engine of the wave
The breakout isn't random. It maps almost perfectly to the Build 42 (B42) release.
- 59 of the 111 Zomboid breakout mods were updated within the last 120 days — the window of the B42 rollout.
- 24 carry "B42" or "[B42]" in their title — a marker creators add when they've reworked a mod for the new build.
- Across every other game on the platform, only a handful of breakout mods share this release-coupled update signature.
Zomboid's breakout mods are update-driven, not new-mod-driven. Zero of the 111 were created recently — these are established mods that creators rebuilt for the new build and, in doing so, re-ignited their demand. It's the clearest evidence yet that a major game update is the most powerful demand event a mod ecosystem can get.
The breakout leaders
These are the Zomboid mods accelerating fastest through the B42 window:
| Mod | Breakout | Subs gained (7d) | Total subs |
|---|---|---|---|
| that DAMN Library – Mangled animated parts | 99.9 | 13,770 | 2.92M |
| '76 Chevrolet K Series | 99.9 | 7,070 | 932K |
| [B42] Bandits NPC | 99.9 | 6,076 | 1.00M |
| CleanUI [B42] | 99.9 | 5,740 | 689K |
| Neat Building [B42] | 99.7 | 5,296 | 486K |
| Fluffy Hair [B41/B42] | 99.8 | 4,841 | 2.69M |
| [B42] Project RV Interior | 99.9 | 4,711 | 639K |
The pattern is telling. The heaviest momentum sits on frameworks and quality-of-life rebuilds — a library that powers animated parts, a UI overhaul, a building mod, hair, and interiors — the scaffolding other creators build on. When the base game updates its guts, the mods that update the mods surge fastest.
Why this matters beyond Zomboid
Two durable lessons for studios and creators:
-
A major update is the biggest modding demand event. Indie Stone shipped a dense build and the modding scene delivered the single largest breakout concentration on the platform. For any studio planning a big update, the mod ecosystem is a hidden marketing channel that fires hardest right at launch — supporting key modders before an update is cheaper and higher-leverage than promoting after.
-
Framework mods are the breakout bellwethers. On every leaderboard table above, the surging mods are the layers everyone builds on (libraries, UI, bases), not single standalone add-ons. Watchers looking for "what's about to blow up" in a game should track its framework mods, not its one-offs.
How we measure
All figures come from the ModSignal live dataset of the Steam Workshop (6.79 million active items, 396 games). "Breakout" uses ModSignal's breakout score — a 0–100 percentile-based gauge of a mod's subscription, favorite, view, and update momentum against its catalogue peers. Subs-gained figures are 7-day deltas from the time_updated snapshot cadence.
This is the data ModSignal tracks daily to spot breakout creators and fading ecosystems early. Explore the live dataset, see Zomboid's full leaderboard, or compare breakout momentum across any game.
