A breakout score tells you who is bending the curve. A growth percentage tells you who is moving fast relative to their own baseline. But neither answers the bluntest question in the Steam Workshop: who actually pulled in the most new subscribers in the last 24 hours?
That is not the same list. A mod with 30,000 subscribers that grows 300% adds far fewer new installs than a megahit with 10 million subscribers that grows a fraction of a percent. Absolute count matters — it is the raw demand being satisfied right now, and it is the cleanest signal of where installs actually flowing.
Using ModSignal's live market-intelligence graph — 7.3 million tracked mods across 401 games — we measured absolute 24-hour subscription change across every active mod. The result is today's snapshot of the Steam Workshop's subscriber machines: 135,465 active mods gained ~2.7 million new subscribers in a single day, and the distribution of that intake is heavily concentrated at the top.
The intake is concentrated
Across all 135,465 mods that gained subscribers in the last day, the top 100 mods captured 12% of the entire daily intake, and the top 1,000 captured 34%. Two thirds of the workshop's daily new-subscriber haul is spread across the remaining 134,000+ gainers.
This is a different concentration pattern from subscription stock (where the top 1,000 hold an even larger share of all-time subs). Daily flow is more democratic than daily stock — the long tail of smaller mods genuinely participates in day-over-day installs — but the very top of the list is still pulling installs by the tens of thousands in a single day.

Three distinct types of subscriber machine appear on this list, and they are worth separating because they behave differently.
Type one: the fresh breakout spike
The top of the list is not a mega-mod — it is a fresh Project Zomboid update. SharkBait's True Line of Sight is only at 30,902 total subscribers, yet it gained +8,776 in a single day (a 40% day-over-day jump) and +23,743 over the week, all at a 99.68 breakout score.
This is the purest form of subscriber demand: a mod hitting the exact moment its community is starved for it. Project Zomboid's Build 42 wave has re-flooded interest in realism and survival mechanics, and a line-of-sight overhaul is riding straight into that demand. A mod gaining more than a quarter of its lifetime installs in one week is the clearest "this is what people want right now" signal the workshop produces.
Similarly, OUROBOROS-0's Nanobot Body update in People Playground gained +6,119 at a 99.99 breakout score — off a modest 41,209 base, so again a big relative jump. And Rust's Metal Chest Plate v2 by ICONA gained +4,694 in a day from a tiny 9,982 base: a newly-published armor part catching the front page of a huge ecosystem.
These are the movers where absolute and relative velocity agree: small-to-mid bases, explosive recent growth, breakout scores near 100.
Type two: the compounding utility mega-mod
The second pattern is the opposite: enormous, established mods still adding thousands a day. rezecib's Combined Status (+6,586 with 10.3M total subs) and Global Positions (+5,140, 8.5M) sit on Don't Starve Together's front edge, and Wofsauge's Isaac re-textures (External Item Descriptions +6,089 / 4.3M, Enhanced Boss Bars +5,294 / 2.2M) do the same.
These mods are not breaking out in the 90s-score sense. Their breakout scores sit at a healthy but unremarkable 84–93. What they demonstrate is that a quality utility mega-mod keeps compounding new installs for years. A 4.3-million-subscriber mod gaining 6,000 more in a day is slow relative growth (<0.2%) but a genuinely large absolute intake — and it never stops because it is a permanent part of that game's default loadout.
The lesson for creators: relative growth favors the fresh and the tiny; absolute growth favors the permanent utility. These are two different games.
Type three: the dependency backbone
The Garry's Mod cluster is its own phenomenon. VJ Base (DrVrej, +4,730), DynaBase (King David™, +5,194), DrGBase (Dragoteryx, +5,990), and the Parakeets Pill Base (+6,094) are all bases — foundational libraries and frameworks that hundreds of other Garry's Mod addons depend on.
When a dependency updates, every mod built on it effectively re-announces itself to the workshop's recommendation graph, and the installs land on the base itself. This is why Garry's Mod dominates the absolute intake leaderboard: the ecosystem's own scaffolding is the biggest subscriber machine. Bases grow because the whole mod scene grows on top of them.
Which games won the biggest single-day intake
Summing absolute daily subscriber gain across the whole catalog, the top ecosystems by total daily new-install intake:
| Game | Mods gaining | Total +24h subs |
|---|---|---|
| Garry's Mod | 2,076 | +301,026 |
| The Binding of Isaac | 2,870 | +192,550 |
| Don't Starve Together | 2,323 | +176,053 |
| DayZ | 1,328 | +173,719 |
| MECCHA CHAMELEON | 622 | +133,718 |
| Left 4 Dead 2 | 2,729 | +95,213 |
| Rivals of Aether | 1,975 | +88,872 |
| RimWorld | 1,588 | +83,658 |
| Teardown | 1,232 | +73,766 |
| Transport Fever 2 | 1,793 | +57,937 |
Garry's Mod is the runaway leader at +301k new subscribers in a day, driven by its dependency backbone plus a busy publishing day. Its 2,076 gaining mods add more raw installs than games with larger catalogs — because its mods are load-bearing foundations, not standalone items.
Note how raw daily volume diverges from sheer mod counts. DayZ and MECCHA CHAMELEON punch far above their mod counts: DayZ gains 174k subs from just 1,328 mods (~131 subs/mod/day), and MECCHA CHAMELEON — a young, exploding early-access scene — gains 134k from a mere 622 mods, the highest per-mod intake on the board.
What this means for creators and studio readers
Absolute 24-hour subscriber intake is the signal ModSignal tracks that the percentage lists hide. Three concrete takeaways:
-
A small mod can beat a giant — if it hits the exact moment. SharkBait's 30,902-sub line-of-sight mod out-gained 10-million-sub giants by thousands of installs. On a hot engine (Project Zomboid Build 42, MECCHA's early access), a well-timed niche update is the highest-leverage subscriber play there is.
-
Utilities compound. Dependencies dominate. The most reliable large daily intake came not from flashy new content but from permanent utility mods and dependency bases. Building the scaffolding a community builds on is the more durable subscriber machine.
-
Per-mod density beats catalog size. MECCHA CHAMELEON and DayZ convert a fraction of the mods into a top-tier daily intake because their per-mod install rate is extreme. When scouting an ecosystem, look at intake-per-mod, not total mods — it tells you where demand is starved relative to supply.
